Abstract
In a combined biochemical and fluorescence histochemical study, the effect of different nitrate explosives on the adrenergic nerves, especially their monoamine oxidase (MAO) has been studied. In fractionated tissue (rabbit liver), it was possible to demonstrate an MAO inhibiting effect in vitro at high concentrations of the compounds, but in intact tissue (rat iris), no effect was observed on the MAO in the adrenergic nerves at the same concentrations. Furthermore, no MAO inhibiting effect was found when animals were treated with nitrate explosives whether given for a short or long period, neither in whole organs nor in adrenergic nerves. The discrepancy with earlier results is discussed. The examined compound showed no clear effect on the uptake, storage, release, or resynthesis of noradrenaline in the adrenergic nerves.
