Abstract

A survey after the fact is not an experiment, and it is difficult to make the modes of inference scientifically rigorous. Still, difficulties and doubts should not be allowed to produce paralysis. If the inevitable methodological defects are faced honestly and sweeping conclusions are not drawn too hastily, valuable information can be garnered.
