Recovery of Simian Virus 40 From Cloned Cultures of Tumor Cells

Relationship to Cellular Morphology

Pages 366-371 | Received 16 Dec 1969, Accepted 01 Apr 1970, Published online: 01 May 2013

Abstract

A line of cultured cells, derived from a simian virus 40 (SV 40)-induced hamster tumor, yielded two types of clones as judged by cellular morphology. Cells from both types of clones contained SV 40 T-antigen and no detectable V-antigen. Cells derived from only one of the types of clones could be induced to produce SV 40 by fusion with permissive cells. The SV 40 virus produced by the inducible clones formed minute plaques.
