Abstract

Insulating workers in the San Francisco Bay area exhibit asbestosis and an excess of deaths due to lung cancer and mesothelial tumors. To meet the challenges to health in this trade, where customary methods of organizing occupational health are not applicable, union and management have jointly developed a program of medical surveillance and industrial hygiene which now covers 13 western states. The development and activities of this unique service are described.
