Air Disinfection in Corridors by Upper Air Irradiation With Ultraviolet

Abstract

Ultraviolet (UV) air disinfection in corridors was studied by atomizing test organisms (Serratia marcescens) and by comparing the concentration of organisms at points downwind along the corridor with upper air UV both on and off. After the organisms had passed one UV fixture, the ratio (count with UV on to count with UV off) was 0.43 ± 0.19 SD, and after the organisms had passed the second UV fixture, the ratio was 0.23 ± 0.15 SD in corridor A. In corridor B the corresponding values were 0.25 ± 0.07 and 0.088 ± 0.04. The more effective disinfection in corridor B was related to the lower ceiling and greater intensity of UV radiation reflected from the ceiling.
