Abstract

A series of experiments involving direct electrical stimulation and surgical transection of the trigeminal nerve have confirmed other reports relating to the trigeminal nerve’s modulating influence over respiratory control Electrical reccrding from the sensory trigeminal nerves provided direct evidence that relates chemical irritation of the nasal mucosa to afferent impulses on the trigeminal narve, resulting in inhibition of respiratory rate. The unit recording technique could provide a quantitative method for evaluating the biological activities of airborne chemical irritants.
