Abstract
The following is the Gehrmann Memorial Lecture, presented October 16, 1975 at the annual meeting of the American Academyof Occupational Medicine, in Houston, Texas. Professor Harold J. Magnuson discusses the social changes that have developed over the last twenty years in association with advances in the fields of environmental and occupational health. In particular, Dr. Magnuson focuses on the problems of evaluating and distributing the information generated by scientific research in these fields. Consumerism, public mistrust of institutions, bureaucracy, governmental policy making, and the limitations of expertise are examined in their relation to this theme.
