The First Two Projects of Michelangelo's Tomb of Julius IIFootnote

Pages 561-579 | Published online: 31 Jul 2015

Abstract

The tomb of Julius II, with which Michelangelo was commissioned in 1505, was to be a free-standing mausoleum “which in beauty and pride, richness of ornamentation, and abundance of statuary surpassed every ancient imperial tomb.”1 This magnificent structure is known to us only through the descriptions of Michelangelo's biographers, Giorgio Vasari and Ascanio Condivi.
