The Younger Masters of the First Campaign of the Porta Della Mandorla, 1391–1397

Pages 1-17 | Published online: 04 Mar 2015

Abstract

IN MEMORIAM • PAUL WHITMAN ETTER • 1929–1958 THIS paper does not pretend to a full view of the sculpture of the elaborate and beautiful portal, on the north flank of the Florentine Cathedral, that has come to be known as the Porta della Mandorla. The scope is too large for a single article; furthermore, an overall study has been in preparation for some time elsewhere. Our objective is purposively narrowed to a small but densely articulated cluster of topics all too evidently still unsettled and in need of attention now.
