On the Nature of the Theodore Psalter

Pages 550-568 | Published online: 14 Aug 2014

Abstract

The Theodore Psalter may be the most important Byzantine manuscript signed and dated by its maker. The miniature cycle was devised for use by the abbot of the Studios Monastery, as a sign of his authority and reminder of his responsibility to the monastic community. By examining the miniatures in the context of earlier illuminated psalters and comparing them with contemporary writings, the book's lessons of virtue and its emphasis on prayer can be shown to reflect important changes in eleventh-century society.
