Abstract
As Edwin Denby explained, de Kooning was able to take an expressionistic technique and make it large and impersonal. He created a classicism that was not linear or contained, and that, coupled with his being eclectic, provided the way for me to entertain the idea of making art lyrical and intimate on a grand scale. When I first showed figures with fiat backgrounds in 1959, de Kooning came by and said he liked them. “They are like photos but they are paintings. Don't let them knock you out of it.”
