I cannot express my gratitude enough to all the individuals who have helped to make the publication of this special issue possible. I benefited immensely from the experience of Audrey Kobayashi, Richard Aspinall, and Karl Zimmerer, who edited the three preceding special issues (Kobayashi Citation2009; Aspinall Citation2010; Zimmerer Citation2011). I thank all who submitted abstracts and manuscripts for consideration. I deeply appreciate all of the authors for their excellent contributions and their efforts in adhering to a tight time table and the length restriction we are required to impose.
