In defence of a simple solution

This paper has been greatly improved as a result of criticisms of earlier versions: the philosophy faculty at Calgary where it was read in 1969, Professors H. P. Grice, George Myro, and especially Benson Mates at Berkeley, where it formed part of the author's Ph.D. dissertation in May 1970, critics at the Annual Conference of the New Zealand Branch of the Australasian Association of Philosophy in May 1971, and the referee for this Journal.
