ABSTRACT
Drawing extensively on the Unesco Guidelines for Conducting Information Manpower Surveys and British workforce modelling by Bray and Turner, this paper describes the background to workforce planning in general and the data collection techniques used in Hong Kong in particular. A description of data collection and analysis procedures is followed by a set of conclusions and recommendations. These comment on the methodology used and note research findings on the following aspects of the library and information workforce in Hong Kong: size and distribution, demographic characteristics, departures, turnover rate, arrivals, vacancies, losses and gains, reductions, increases, growth, recruitment and training needs. Implications for the future are also presented.
