Abstract
Aim: The objective of the workshop is for participants to consider and discuss the concept of clinical risk in working with people meeting diagnostic criteria for borderline personality disorder. Topics covered will include reasons for defensive “fear driven” practice and the consequences. There will be exploration of expert opinion and evidence base for the legitimacy of professionally indicated risk-taking. Discussion will include creating a robust, medicolegally sound climate that is safe for clinicians to take professionally indicated risk in the client's best interest.
The facilitator will present a 20-minute paper intended as a catalyst for discussion. The remaining time (over an hour) will be unstructured, providing participants with an opportunity to discuss the topic. This may include hearing how people have grappled with the issues in the past and how we individually and collectively may deal with the issues involved in the future.
