Abstract

Objectives: Disorders of gender identity are frequently seen as difficult to treat and resistant to psychotherapeutic intervention. This workshop will outline issues in the clinical assessment, diagnosis and psychodynamic understanding of gender-dysphoria and disturbances of gender-identity, and examine approaches to psychotherapy.

Method: Clinical case material will be presented to illustrate the complex theoretical, ethical and political debates in the area and the process of psychotherapy.
