Abstract
Objective: To determine the differences across specialist groups in the use of psychotropic medications prescribed during pregnancy and lactation, with a particular focus on prophylaxis of puerperal psychosis.
Methods: A questionnaire was devised about the use of a range of psychotropic medications which potentially may be used by those treating pregnant or lactating women. The questionnaire was then given or mailed to relevant medical groups including obstetricians, general practitioners undertaking shared obstetric care, perinatal physicians and perinatal psychiatrists. 178 questionnaires were returned. The results were formatted and analysed.
Summary: Significant differences were found in several parameters measured:
Awareness of effective prophylaxis for puerperal psychosis
Psychotropic medication chosen between specialist groups
Prophylactic medication chosen by perinatal psychiatrists.
