SOIL CONSERVATION AND FORESTRY IN THE AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY

Pages 9-16 | Published online: 15 Apr 2013

SUMMARY

Compared with the soil erosion that is occurring in many areas of New South Wales, the position in the Australian Capital Territory is not serious.

There has been a great improvement since the Commonwealth acquired the area under discussion

The conifer plantations established in the Cotter Catchment Area at Mt. Stromlo and other areas have resulted in a marked reduction in soil erosion.

Areas suffering from erosion have been withdrawn from grazing and planted with P. radiata.

It is proposed to withdraw some 600 acres from grazing for planting with P. radiata as soon as men and equipment are available.
