SUMMARY
Attention is drawn to the use of punched card systems for recording information in a manner which enables easy reference to be made, by mechanical means, to the cards which possess any given attribute or combination of attributes. Examples are given of the wide range of purposes for which such cards are used.
A description is given of hand and machine-sorted punched card systems and consideration given to the various factors involved in planning a system for any particular purpose, together with reference to examples of cards used in the biological sciences.
Finally there is a survey of some of the uses of punched card systems in forestry and allied sciences in Australia, together with suggestions for possible extension in botany, national forest inventory, and research work generally, including problems in fire protection and the activating of useful information on old files.
