SUMMARY
Root systems of seedlings of 14 Victorian eucalypts are described. Their root growth is compared with their shoot growth on the basis of length, oven-dry weight, and fresh weight.
The species native to dry areas develop a long tap-root with few weak laterals, those on more favourable sites usually a shallow, flbrous root system.
Root/shoot ratios of species from dry areas were higher than those for species from moister zones. A similar trend was apparent with seedlings of E. sideroxylon produced from seeds collected along the moisture gradient within its distribution range.
