EFFECT OF BARK RETENTION ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF MOUNTAIN ASH POLE THINNINGS DURING KILN DRYING

&
Pages 130-135 | Published online: 15 Apr 2013

SUMMARY

Results of preliminary work on the kiln drying of 7–8 inch butt diameter poles of E. regnans under mild conditions are presented. The retention of the bark reduced the drying rate and end degrade, but had no apparent effect on barrel checking.

A new method of removing samples for moisture content-determination during drying is described. It is shown that values obtained by this method for green material are comparable with those given by cutting peripheral strips from discs removed from the ends of pole sections.
