Forest Use Conflicts in Victoria

SUMMARY

The evolution of forest use planning in Victoria from the work of the early surveyors to the present procedures of the Land Conservation Council and the Soil Conservation Authority is described.

The application of economic techniques is advocated and an example of the calculation of the benefit to society arising from commercial forest production is given. Comments are made on the strengths and weaknesses of the various methods of resolving forest use conflicts.
