Site factors related to growth of coniferous plantations in a temperate, hilly zone of Argentina

Summary

Relationships between environmental variables and several growth indicators of unthinned coniferous plantations (Pinus halepensis, Pinus radiata, Cedrus deodara and Cupressus sempervirens f. horizontalis) were studied using correlation analysis and stepwise multiple regression in Ventania, a hilly zone in southern Buenos Aires, Argentina. Growth of P. radiata was affected mainly by gross climatic factors, whilst P. halepensis and C. deodara were influenced by soil and topographic factors. Growth of C. sempervirens was investigated in a more restricted range of site conditions and could be related to soil fertility and moisture factors. The regression models explained 60–85% of the variation in site index.
