Opening a window to the West: the foreign concession at Kōbe, Japan, 1868–1899

Semple, Anne-Louise. 2016. Review of Opening a window to the West: the foreign concession at Kōbe, Japan, 1868–1899, by Peter Ennals. Australian Geographer. Advance online publication. doi:10.1080/00049182.2016.1256750.

When the above article was first published online, the first line of the review read, ‘There is a Japanese expression: “If you can’t go to Paris, go to Kōbe.”’ This has now been changed to the more respectful ‘There is a Japanese expression which when translated to English, states: “If you can’t go to Paris, go to Kōbe.”’
