Atmospheric physiography and meteoronomical modelling: the future role of geographers in understanding climate

Pages 1-25 | Published online: 24 Feb 2007

SUMMARY

Description of characteristics and process following appropriate synthesis of point‐specific observations is still, perhaps surprisingly, required to further our understanding of climate. Numerical modelling of climate appears to be deterministic and well understood and yet there is often a mis‐match between the time and space scales of the models, and their integral parameterisations, and the projected ‘predictions’. Quantitative synthesis based upon appropriate description of process and spatial analysis are urgently needed in contemporary climatology. It is my contention that geographers have much to offer to both the ‘atmospheric physiography’ and ‘meteoronomical modelling’ aspects of modern climate study.
