Land system mapping using landsat multispectral scanner imagery in the Willandra lakes region of western New South Wales

Pages 26-36 | Published online: 24 Feb 2007

SUMMARY

Satellite imagery provides a cost effective method of mapping distinctive assemblages of landforms, soils and vegetation over large areas, especially where access is poor. This study reports on an evaluation of supervised and unsupervised techniques of classifying Landsat reflectance information in the Wiilandra Lakes World Heritage region. The accuracy of mapping derived from Landsat information compares very favourably with land systems mapping on the ground.
