Visual illusions: A short review

Pages 153-156 | Published online: 27 Sep 2007

Abstract

It is argued that visual illusions are informative about fundamental perceptual processes. Attempts to account for certain geometrical illusions using relatively high-level psychological processes, notably Day (1989), are contrasted with accounts of other illusions based on low-level computational processes. It is suggested that the essentially qualitative accounts involving high-level processes might benefit from the formal rigour of the computational approach.
