Freud and his empirical evidence

Pages 171-175 | Published online: 27 Sep 2007

Abstract

Throughout his life Freud claimed psychoanalysis was a natural science. In this paper I establish Freud's characterisation, and test aspects of his claim by examining the way he collected and evaluated direct observational evidence, as well as the way he collected and evaluated evidence and counter-evidence in the therapeutic situation. I conclude by showing that interpreting dreams is not an empirical endeavour.
