Abstract

It’s that time of year – conferences, symposia and seminars have been a feature of the librarianship professional education landscape in the past few months. The ALIA Biennial held in Sydney in July gave participants and presenters from all sectors a chance to mix and learn from each other. This cross-sectoral model, within the overarching and unifying influence of keynote addresses, I believe, has great value and deserves support. Diversity in our profession is a strength. The library network is pervasive. So even though there are times when it is important to work towards particular goals within special interest groups or geographic locations, in this age of the inclusive knowledge network, exclusivity is not the way to go. In short, there is much that we can learn from each other, and we need to support a conference model that encourages inclusivity.
