Abstract

In 1992 I took over from Senator Robert Hill as the Senate Representative on the Council of the National Library of Australia. The Senate renewed this appointment every three years and I finally said good-bye to the NLA when I retired from the Senate thirteen years later in 2005. I would have liked to tell you that I maintained this position after fierce hand-to-hand combat with dozens of Senate colleagues who also prized this position every three years.
