The culture of fertile tissue of Fucus vesiculosus

Pages 209-212 | Published online: 02 Jul 2007

Abstract

The tips of receptacles of Fucus vesiculosus L. have been cultured in the laboratory. In sterile seawater they continue to grow and to develop parallel with those on the seashore. The addition of naphthalene acetic acid, naphthoxyacetic acid or kinetin to the medium decreased growth and delayed time of gamete discharge. Unlike vegetative tissue in culture, fertile tissue was slow to form a wound callus and no new branches were ever regenerated from it.
