Abstract
New information about the morphology and distribution of the marine planktonic diatom, Neodelphineis pelagica Takano is given. Net material from the Pacific Ocean off Mexico was analysed by light and electron microscopy. The species showed the basic structure as reported when newly described. However, the specimens found here present a new and distinct pattern of chain formation with cells joined by mucilaginous threads. Other variations within this species, as well as the relationships of the genus Neodelphineis to related genera are discussed.
