Synopsis

The distribution of inorganic ions between erythrocytes and plasma and the carbon dioxide in the plasma of venous blood of the adult Brown Leghorn cock were determined.

A relatively high concentration of magnesium was present in the erythrocyte. The amounts of sodium and potassium in blood plasma are higher than those found in the plasma of most mammals and the human; these findings in relation to the high osmotic pressure of avian plasma are discussed.
