1. The effects of five variables—time of work period, egg shell colour, backspin, belt speed and light source—on the shell egg candling performance of 12 professional candlers have been investigated under experimental conditions.
2. A sample of 720 eggs was taken for detailed examination after each hour of candling, the samples being checked and scored for shell defects and inclusions as measures of candling accuracy.
3. The best results were obtained with the combination of a belt speed of 20,160 eggs per hour, a mercury light source and no backspin.
