Settler colonialism or colonies with settlers?

Notes

1. Many years ago I asked my PhD supervisor, John Flint, why he called his first book Sir George Goldie and the Making of Nigeria (London, Oxford UP, 1960 ). He told me his publisher made him do it. Fortunately the historiography has moved beyond the Great (White) Man as a dominant force in shaping history. Nonetheless, the term “settler colonialism” lives on despite its artificial beginnings.
