Damage-mechanics-based modelling of failure of squeeze-cast AM50 magnesium alloy

ABSTRACT

Static and impact tests on bars and plates of squeeze-cast AM50 were used to calibrate a failure surface that depends on tri-axiality and Lode angle. Both notched and un-notched bars and plates were tested. Assuming isotropic plastic response, but asymmetry of work hardening in compression and tension, a damage-mechanics-based model is used to model static and impact loading. Predictions using the model are found to be in reasonable agreement with the experimental results; peak loads and ductility are well described by the model, particularly, for engineering applications. Qualitatively, the model predicts the crack growth in good agreement with observations for experiments wherein the tri-axiality is higher. Likewise, the predicted deformation and failure response are in good agreement with the experimental deformation and failure for higher tri-axiality experiments. We suggest that owing to the coarse grain size, at high levels of deformation, the response is not uniform which make continuum-based modelling a challenge. Nevertheless, the present effort is suitable for predictions of failure in engineering practice.

RÉSUMÉ

On a utilisé des essais statiques et des essais d'impact de barres et de tôles d'AM50 formées par forgeage liquide pour calibrer une surface de défaillance qui dépend de l'aspect triaxial et de l'angle de Lode. On a évalué des barres et des tôles avec ou sans entaille. Assumant une réponse plastique isotrope, mais une asymétrie d'écrouissage en compression en en tension, on utilise un modèle basé sur la mécanique du dommage pour modéliser la charge statique et la charge d'impact. Les prédictions basées sur le modèle étaient en accord raisonnable avec les résultats expérimentaux; le modèle décrit bien les charges de pointe et la ductilité, en particulier pour les applications d'ingénierie. Qualitativement, le modèle prédit la croissance de fissure, en bon accord avec les observations pour les expériences là où l'aspect triaxial est plus élevé. De la même façon, la déformation prédite et la réponse de la défaillance sont en accord avec la déformation expérimentale et la défaillance pour les expériences avec l'aspect triaxial plus élevé. Nous suggérons que, en raison de la taille de grain grossier, aux niveaux élevés de déformation, la réponse n'est pas uniforme, ce qui constitue un défi pour la modélisation à base de continuum. Néanmoins, l'effort actuel est adapté aux prédictions de défaillance en pratique d'ingénierie.
