Abstract
In addition to his published works of scholarship, Edward L. Keenan has made many contributions to the field of Slavic Studies. This article explores his role as a mentor, both of his own students, and of many students from other universities who visited Harvard under his auspices and who, as his “unofficial” students, were helped greatly by his generous advice. It also examines briefly the impact of his undergraduate lectures on the many Slavists who heard them as his official or unofficial students or as Harvard undergraduates. A number of other unpublished Keenan lectures circulated as recordings or manuscripts among a wide group of scholars. Finally, Keenan played a remarkably active role in building the institutions that have enriched the professional lives of generations of Slavists.”
