Haptoglobin Polymorphism—another system to differentiate blood groups

Pages 21-26 | Received 18 Nov 1974, Published online: 22 Nov 2013

ABSTRACT

Haptoglobin phenotypes in blood stains may be identified by vertical electrophoresis in Polyacrylamide gel in a continuous concentration gradient of 5% to 25%.

Blood stains up to five weeks old were successfully grouped yielding reproducible results. There are three main phenotypes. Two relatively rare phenotypic variants which occur chiefly in negroid populations have also been described.
