Non-Destructive Tests for Field Examinations of Writing Inks and Pens

Pages 53-56 | Received 05 Nov 1978, Published online: 22 Nov 2013

ABSTRACT

Differentiation of writing inks during field examinations can be accomplished by a battery of nondestructive tests. The most useful is careful visual examination assisted by hand magnifiers or low power binocular microscopes under varying lighting conditions to recognize both the tints of the ink and the writing quality of the stroke as it was prepared with a ball point pen. Supplementary studies involving infrared, ultraviolet, and possibly infrared luminescent examinations should be applied and the use of the dichroic filter for an additional helpful technique.
