The Persistence of Fibres Transferred During Contact of Automobile Carpets and Clothing Fabrics

ABSTRACT

The transfer of fibres is of interest in the investigation of many crimes. In an effort to assess the likelihood or frequency of transfer of automobile carpeting fibres, simulated transfers were carried out in vehicles with several fabric types. Factors which influence fibre transfer were tested, including pressure of contact, nature of recipient material, nature of transferring materials, age and location of carpeting. Increased pressure showed no positive correlation with number of fibres transferred. The more highly textured fabrics, corduroy and wool crepe, picked up the most fibres. The nylon/acrylic carpet shed the greatest number of fibres and carpeting from late model vehicles shed more fibres than the carpeting from older vehicles. The percentage of nylon and polypropylene carpeting fibres still recoverable after wearing recipient fabrics during normal activity was investigated. The polypropylene fibres showed more persistence than the nylon fibres on the fabrics tested and the textured fabrics retained more fibres than the smooth surfaced fabrics. To aid in the investigation of findings of automobile carpeting fibres in casework, data was collected on the type of fibre utilized by some of the major automobile manufacturers.

RÉSUMÉ

Le transfert de fibres est sujet d'intérêt dans l'enquête de plusieurs crimes. Afin d'évaluer la probabilité ou la fréquence du transfert de fibres de tapis d'automobile, des transferts simulés furent expérimentés dans des véhicules à tapis divers. Plusieurs facteurs pouvant influencer le transfert de fibres, tels que la pression excercée au contact, le genre de tissues receveur, le type de fibre transferré ainsi que l'age du tapis et son emplacement furent étudiés. Aucune correlation fut démontré entre l'augmentation de la pression exercée et le nombre de fibres transferrées. Les tissus à tissage rugueux tels le velour côtelé et la laine de crêpe relevèrent le plus grand nombre de fibres. La perte de fibres fut la plus élevé chez les tapis de type nylon acrylique et chez les tapis de véhicules nouveaux. Le pourcentage de fibres du tapis en nylon et en polypropylene encore recouverable après le port de tissus receveurs durant l'activité normale fut étudié. Les fibres de polypropylene démontrèrent plus de tenacité que les fibres de nylon sur les tissus utilisées. Les tissus rugueux retenèrent plus de fibres que les tissus lisses. Des données sur les types de fibres de tapis utilisées par plusieurs des grands manufacturiers d'automobile furent collectionniés.
