The Effects of Moisture on Safe Insulations Containing Portland Cement

ABSTRACT

An increase in calcium carbonate concentration may occur when a sample of Portland cement-based safe insulation is exposed to ambient air (eg. moisture and carbon dioxide).

This difference in concentration could erroneously lead an uninformed forensic examiner to conclude that two safe insulations having different calcium carbonate concentrations came from different safes when, in fact, one of the samples could simply have been exposed to moisture.

Safe insulations from ten different sources were examined by diamond cell infrared spectrophotometry after exposure to water saturated and water saturated/carbon dioxide enriched atmospheres for various time intervals. The results of this study were compared to the same safe insulations exposed only to surrounding room air.

Most safe insulations when exposed to high humidity showed large increases in calcium carbonate concentrations within two hours.

RÉSUMÉ

La concentration de carbonate de calcium dans des échantillons d'isolant de coffre-fort à base de ciment Portland peut augmenter si ces derniers sont exposés à l'humidité et au bioxyde de carbone.

La différence de concentration peut mener un expert judiciaire peu averti à conclure que deux isolants ayant une teneur différente en carbonate de calcium proviennent de sources différentes alors qu'en réalité un des deux a été exposé à l'humidité.

On a examiné par spectrophotométrie à l'infrarouge avec cellule diamant les isolants de dix sources différentes après les avoir exposé pendant différentes durées à un air humide et à un air humide enrichi de bioxyde de carbone. On a comparé les résultats à ceux obtenus dans l'air ambiant.

La plupart des isolants exposés à une forte humidité ont accusé une augmentation importante de la teneur en carbonate de calcium en moins de deux heures.
