ABSTRACT
After a brief discussion of paper grain, an important physical property of paper, and of two standard destructive methods to identify it, a simple, non-destructive, microscopic method to determine the grain or machine direction of paper is described in detail.
A test to verify the reliability of the method and another to evaluate the examiner's precision in performing the examination are also described.
The usefulness of determining the machine direction of paper is illustrated in two practical cases where this examination was of the utmost importance. Other cases where the method can be used as a routine test are also discussed.
RÉSUMÉ
Après avoir brièvement défini ce qu'est le grain ou sens machine du papier et avoir révisé deux méthodes destructives standards pour identifier sa direction, l'auteur s'emploie à exposer en détail une méthode microscopique, simple et non-destructive, pour déterminer la direction du grain du papier.
Un premier test pour vérifier l'exactitude de la méthode et un second, pour en évaluer la précision et estimer l'habileté de l'utilisateur, sont également exposés.
L'utilité de déterminer la direction du grain du papier lors d'une expertise de document est illustré par deux cas pratiques où l'examen du grain s'est avéré d'une extrême importance. D'autres cas où la méthode est utilisée comme test de routine supplémentaire sont également discutés.
