ABSTRACT
Both genetic and environmental factors influence the ages and rate of dental growth; however, it is generally accepted that ethnicity affects dental growth more dominantly than other growth criteria. The Middle Eastern populations belong to the mediterranean group of the primary Caucasoid races, yet marked infiltration of Mongoloid and Negroid elements took place at certain periods of history. In addition, marked variations exist in the socio-economic and other environmental conditions within the Middle Eastern populations.
Comparative assessment of dates of emergence of both deciduous and permanent teeth for the Egyptian, Nubian, Iraqi and Tunisi children has been attempted with respect to the available information concerning other ethnic groups. It has been concluded that there are biological, ecological and methodological limitations that should be considered for the accurate estimation of age from dental growth in children.
RÉSUMÉ
Les facteurs génétiques et environnementaux influencent l'âge et la vitesse de la croissance dentaire, cependant iI est généralement reconnu que l'ethnie affecte de façon plus importante la croissance dentaire que tout critère. Les populations de Moyen-Orient appartiennent au groupe Méditerranéen des races primaires caucasiennes bien qu'une infiltration d'éléments Mongoloïdes et Négroïdes se soit produit au cours de certaines périodes de l'histoire. En plus, des variations marquées dans les conditions socio-économiques et environnementales existent à l'intérieur même des populations du Moyen-Orient.
Une évaluation comparative des dates d'émergence des dents primaires et permanentes chez des enfants égyptiens, nubiens, irakiens et tunisiens a été tentée se basant sur l'information disponible concernant d'autres groupes ethniques. Nous avons pu alors conclure que des limitations biologiques, écologiques et méthodologiques doivent être considérées pour une estimation juste de l'âge, basée sur la croissance dentaire, chez l'enfant.
