Evaporation Rate of Gasoline from Shoes, Clothing, Wood and Carpet Materials and Kerosene from Shoes and Clothing

ABSTRACT

This study measures the persistence of gasoline and kerosene on various unburned substrate materials. Some of the most common materials normally encountered in casework were chosen—shoes, clothing, wood and carpet materials. For comparison purposes, both indoor and outdoor experiments were conducted. Results show that relative volatility, surrounding temperature, and the absorption characteristics of the substrate are important factors in determining the evaporation rate of the petroleum product. Information such as this illustrates the importance of timeliness in sample collection by the fire investigator.

RÉSUMÉ

Cette étude porte sur la détermination de la persistance de l'essence et du kérosène sur différents matériaux non brûlés. Quelques-uns des matériaux les plus souvent rencontrés dans les causes ont été choisis—chaussures, vêtements, bois et tapis. Pour fins de comparaison, des expériences ont été effectuées à l'intérieur ainsi qu'à l'extérieur. Les résultats démontrent que la volatilité relative, la température ambiante et les caractéristiques absorbantes du matériel sont des facteurs importants dans la détermination de la vitesse d'évaporation du produit pétrolier. De telles informations illustrent l'importance de receuillir les échantillons le plus tôt possible.
