ABSTRACT

A human skeleton which was initially believed to be the remains of a North American Indian, was uncovered at the native village of Ahousat, B.C. However, further study revealed that it was that of a Caucasian man buried in the native tradition. The skull and mandible were examined and the temporomandibular joint was found to show an unusual configuration. Additionally, some teeth contained amalgam dental fillings. It was concluded that the most likely explanation for the remodelled and anteriorly displaced mandibular condyles was trauma around the age of puberty. A scanning electron microscopic energy dispersive x-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) of a sample of green discolored dental fillings, lead to the conclusion that the material was copper amalgam, probably placed near the turn of the century.
