Fibre Concentration by Membrane Vacuum Filtration in Preparation for Rapid Microscopic Comparison

Pages 177-181 | Published online: 22 Nov 2013

ABSTRACT

In recent years, the use of clear cellulose adhesive tape for gathering forensically significant textile fibres has become the method of choice. While this technique has greatly facilitated the removal of extraneous fibres from exhibit materials, the searching and removing of recovered fibres from cellulose tape is still a tedious and time consuming process.

Questioned fibres are removed from cellulose tape and suspended in solution by dissolving tape adhesive. Use of membrane filtration under vacuum rapidly concentrates fibres on one filter disk, which is subsequently observed under low power microscope for screening, followed by direct mounting for rapid high power microscopic viewing and comparison.
