Determination of Serum Alcohol: Blood Alcohol Ratios

, , &
Pages 123-126 | Published online: 22 Nov 2013

ABSTRACT

One hundred and thirty-four healthy men and women who had consumed alcoholic beverages provided two near-simultaneous venous blood samples. One of the samples was centrifuged to produce a serum portion and the other was analyzed as whole blood. The alcohol concentrations were determined using gas chromatographic methods. The mean blood alcohol concentration was 105.2 mg % (range 21.8 −154.8) and the mean serum alcohol concentration was 120.8 mg% (range 25.0 −183.1). The mean serum:blood alcohol ratio was 1.15 (range 1.10–1.25, S.D. 0.02).
