ABSTRACT

Dental evidence can be crucial to the successful resolution of forensic investigations. The unique features of teeth have been used for centuries to establish the identity of living and deceased persons. Recently other dental exhibits, such as bite marks, chewing gum, dental prostheses and restorations, saliva stains, etc. have been used to answer difficult questions which often arise during investigations of serious or violent crimes. This paper provides a review of the scope of forensic dentistry and attempts to explain the involvement of the forensic dentist in criminal investigations. Established techniques are reviewed, as well as some of the challenging new developments which apply modern forensic testing methods to dental evidence.
