Facial Reproduction using Endodontic K-Files to Establish Anterior Tooth Position

ABSTRACT

In June 1993, a Cessna 404 aircraft crashed and burned at Hassai Airstrip, Sudan while attempting an emergency landing. Eleven people on board were killed. The remains of E.H., a driller from Burnaby, B.C., Canada, were identified by local authorities and repatriated to Canada for burial. Dental examination of the body by Canadian experts revealed many gross discrepancies compared to antemortem records of the alleged decedent. Therefore, this could not be the body of E.H. Through the efforts of a British Columbia coroner, it was suspected that the body of a Sudanese national had been substituted. Fragments from burned and traumatically fractured upper and lower front teeth in the body sent to Canada were reconstructed by an odontologist using endodontic (root canal) K-files. This allowed a dental technician to simulate the dental appearance and a forensic artist to complete a facial reproduction based on photographs of the skull. This reproduction will be presented to foreign authorities to gain permission to continue the search for the remains of E.H.

RÉSUMÉ

En juin 1993, un avion de type Cessna 404 s'est écrasé et a brûlé sur la piste d'at- terissage Hassai au Sudan lors d'une tentative d'atterissage précipitée par un état d'urgence. Les onze personnes à bord ont été tuées. Le cadavre de E.H., un spécialiste en forage de Burnaby, C. B., Canada, a été identifié par les autorités locales et rapatrié au Canada pour être enterré. L'examen dentaire du cadavre par les experts canadiens a révélé des divergences majeures en comparaison avec les dossiers dentaires antemortem. Or donc, il ne s'agissait pas du cadavre de E.H. Grâce aux efforts d'un coroner de la Colombie Britannique, un doute a été soulevé qu'il y avait eu une substitution avec un cadavre d'origine soudanaise. Suite au traumatisme et au feu, des fragments de dents antéro-supérieures et antéro-inférieures du cadavre envoyé au Canada ont permis la reconstruction des dents par un odontologiste à l'aide des limes d'endodontie (‘K-files’). Ceci a par la suite permis à un techinicien dentaire de simuler l'apparence dentaire et à un artiste judiciaire de compléter une reproduction du visage basée sur des photographies du crâne. Cette reproduction sera soumise aux autorités étrangères afin d'obtenir la permission de continuer les recherches pour trouver le cadavre de E.H.
