Fatal Intoxication with Propoxur—A Carbamate Insecticide

ABSTRACT

A case of fatal, suicidal poisoning attributed to the carbamate insecticide, propoxur (“Baygon”; 2-isopropoxyphenyl-N-methylcarbamate) is reported. Concentrations of propoxur were: blood 43.9 mg/L, vitreous 11.6 mg/L, liver 52.1 mg/kg, bile 46.8 mg/L, urine 7.6 mg/L, with 73 mg remaining in 93 g of gastric contents. Small amounts of ethanol, isopropanol and acetone were also detected.

RÉSUMÉ

Un cas de suicide par empoisonnement avec le propoxur (“Baygon”; 2-isopropoxyphényle-N-méthylcarbamate), un insecticide de type carbamate, est documenté. Les concentrations de propoxur qui ont été retrouvées étaient: 43.9 mg/L dans le sang, 11.6 mg/L dans l'humeur vitrée, 52.1 mg/kg dans le foie, 46.8 mg/L dans la bile, 7.6 mg/L dans l'urine et il avait 73 mg de propoxur dans les 93 g de contenu d'estomac. De faibles concentrations il y avait éthanol, d'isopropanol et d'acétone ont également été trouvées.
